Character Design: "Flamestress"

This is a character design that I did a few days ago in my sketch book. I used to work more frequently in my sketch book before college and I'm trying to get back into it. I started this image with almost nothing in mind other than that I wanted to draw a woman. After I got the pose down the rest of the piece almost designed itself. Overall I'm really pleased with the result and I can't wait to add color!

In other news the COPOUT Christmas/holiday issue is coming up fast and there will be a brand new Spaceman & Bloater issue inside! More on that in the coming weeks but until then "Hi ho drawing desk, Awwaaaaaaaaaayyyyy!"

Terror Behind the Walls T-shirt

First of all, NYCC was great and I'll have an in depth post about my trip soon but for now I wanted to share something else. On my way back from New York I made a stop in Philly for a night and got to go on a Halloween Haunt at Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary. Some of you probably know that back in my last semester of college my senior class participated in a project with Eastern State to pitch projects for their Halloween Event and I was one of two lucky students who had their work selected. Due to this partnership I and the other students from the Uarts 2012 Illustration class as well as the current Uarts Illustration seniors were treated to a trip through the Halloween haunt as well as a private gathering with some snacks and a display of some of last years work which was created for the penitentiary. All in all it was a good time and it was great to see some of my friends from school. Below is the image i created for Terror Behind the Walls and some pictures from last night as well as a few pictures from when I received my shirt samples.

My design for TBTW

Me with a weird look on my face and excited that I have 2 shirts!

If you are interested in buying a shirt you can get them at the Terror Behind the Walls gift shop or online right here!

Be sure to stay tuned for my experience at NYCC!

Ragman and Supergirl comics

Well it's finally here New York Comic Con. I've been preparing for this for a little over a month and I'm glad I can finally show my work. Below are two four page comics one featuring Ragman and the other featuring Supergirl and Miss Martian. All of these are characters from the DC Universe. Enjoy and feel free to comment or critique them. I'll be posting them on my main website soon as well.

The Rat Boy

This was a fun one! Another piece for Uarts alumni event called The Final Crit (the group I'm part of with a bunch of other Uarts illustration grads and students) This was a bit more up my ally than the pokemon piece and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I was inspired by these old photos of child mugshots from the 1800's but since the prompt was to "draw something of a hellish nature" I wanted to make it a bit creepier. Hopefully I succeeded.

Since it's been a while since I've made a post showing the various stages of my work
I thought I'd do that as well.

This is the Thumbnail.  As you can see there is no rat present.
I very rarely add something major to a piece if I didn't include it in the thumbnail
but this was an exception.

This is the sketch. I light boxed a large print out of the thumbnail onto plain printer paper.
At sketch stage i find it useful to use lower quality paper so that I don't get too precious with the drawing.

This is the final drawing before color. It's pencil on smooth finish bristol.

One hour warm up

Not really much explanation or reasoning here I just felt like doing a character study and this is what happened. I have a tendency to over think everything so today I just decided, whatever happens on the paper happens. Apparently I wanted to draw a kid in a hoodie.

Fat Ninja

This past Friday was another First Friday in Philadelphia which means the newest issue of C.O.P.O.U.T. comics was released! If you're unfamiliar with  C.O.P.O.U.T. comics, it is a collective of illustrator/cartoonists which I have been a part of since it started about a year ago. We release short monthly comics and regularly rotate artists for each issue. If you want to find out more go here. This Month's issue was done by myself, and  Crystal Ben, with a cover by Andy Hood. Below is my issue, enjoy!

I Choose You! (Revisions)

Well here's the final for the Pokemon challenge. I made a few small changes to the values and detail in the trees. Nothing too drastic but noticeable, and it brings everything together I think.

I Choose You!

Today's post is a bit random as it involves a subject with which I normally wouldn't illustrate. Not that I don't like Pokemon, rather I've just never thought to draw them. I'd say I have an appreciation for the super powered animals who are caught by children and forced to fight against their will in elaborate tournaments but I never had a gameboy as a kid. As such when Pokemon was at the height of its  popularity I was very out of the loop in terms of the actual story. Nevertheless I've always thought it was an interesting concept.

The prompt for this came from a Uarts alumni event called The Final Crit. There are a fairly good amount of Uarts grads in this event and it is the first of many challenges I'll be doing.

Jump, Flip, Tumble and Roll

Lately I've been feeling that my figures look too stiff. To fix this I decided to reenact an exercise from my junior year figure drawing class. Draw from parkour videos! This is a great way to get a wide variety of action poses.

I'm assuming it's pretty self explanatory but the exercise involves pausing the video and then drawing the freeze frame. I highly recommend trying this exercise, especially if you struggle with action poses.

Easter Island Heads Have Bodies!!!

This is something that I saw on James Gurney's blog and I thought it was so awesome that I had to reblog it. Apparently those giant head statues on Easter Island have bodies! Surprisingly this excavation has been going on for a while but most people are unaware of it ( I certainly was). Ancient stone structures and sculptures have always fascinated me and I find a lot of inspiration in the mystery which surrounds them. So, this was really exciting.  Go here to see more of the below images and read a bit about them. Thanks to James Gurney for posting this!

Here's another article I found while searching online.

If giant ancient statues with bodies aren't your cup of tea than maybe this next thing will strike your fancy.
A while ago I found the image below of children fighting zombies on a playground. The image was done by concept artist Jason Chan. If you've never seen his work you should click on that link a few words back. Why am I bringing this up? I was informed by Crystal Ben who made a post on this a day or two ago that this image has prompted a kickstarter to fund the actual creation of a game based on this image!

Yes today was a reblog day for me but if you didn't know about these things now you do! If you did my apologies for boring you and I'll have some more original content soon!
